Xiaomi chose to launch its next flagship the day before the officialization of the new Apple smartphone. Will its assets be enough to eclipse the iPhone 8? Nothing is less sure.
Almost a year ago, Xiaomi shook the smartphone sector by offering the Mi Mix, a device on the screen almost without edge. The Chinese brand chose September 11, 2017 to present the successor of this device, the Mi Mix 2. A date that is surely not chosen at random since it is the day before the presentation of the new iPhone. It remains to be seen whether this Chinese smartphone has enough to compete with those of the brand with the apple.
To start, let's talk about the screen. The Mi Mix 2 should have a curved Amoled QHD slab with an enormous diagonal of 6.4 inches. A couple of weeks ago, the designer Philippe Starck, asked by Xiaomi to give a first look at the Mi Mix 2, published a short video of his work. The teasing shots posted by the brand and the image put online by Qualcomm confirm that the brand has chosen to make the beautiful, even very beautiful, on the screen since it occupies almost the entire surface of the smartphone. On three sides the edges are almost invisible and on the fourth (the bottom edge), there is just room to place some sensors.
The iPhone 8, meanwhile, should offer a 5.8-inch Oled slab not curved, it also, almost without edge. This smartphone would offer a 18: 9 format instead of the more classic 16: 9, while the Mi Mix 2 could be confined to 17: 9 as its predecessor. Wider and easier to hold, the 18: 9 aspect ratio (which could, for example, allow a vertical Split View) allows you to display more content in the length. Conversely, it may pose worry with videos, games and apps that have not yet planned this format. Anyway, in terms of seduction, the advantage should return to the iPhone for its dimensions less "out of the norm".
As for the processor, the Mi Mix 2, just like the Mi6, Xiaomi's latest flagship, will ship a Snapdragon 835 processor as confirmed by Qualcomm on its Weibo account. This chip is the most powerful of the American smelter and equips the high-end models of many manufacturers such as Nokia 8, OnePlus 5, HTC U11 or Sony Xperia XZ Premium. This will ensure good performance.
On the Apple side, we evoke a new A11 chip engraved in 10 nm. Like the Snapdragon 835, this fine engraving should ensure better management of energy consumption but also more performance. Associated with the optimization of iOS, the A11 could well put the competition at risk for a few months. To check on our next test of the new iPhone.
Price, a decisive factor
On the photo side, the advantage will surely also on the side of the iPhone 8 which should sport a dual camera module, with 3D laser and a facial recognition system which is expected a lot. The Mi Mix 2 would only be equipped with a 21 or 19 Mpix rear sensor and a 13 Mpix front sensor.
For the rest of the features of the Chinese smartphone, we talk about 6 GB or 8 GB of RAM, a storage space of 128 or 256 GB, a fingerprint sensor, Android 7.1 or 8.0 according to some sources. As for the battery, it could have a capacity of 4,400 or 4,500 mAh. If so, the Mi Mix 2 could well outweigh the iPhone in terms of autonomy.
What will make the final difference will probably be the sum that consumers will be willing to shell out for their smartphone. On the Apple side we talk about an invoice varying from 999 to 1199 dollars while for Xiaomi, we evoke a range ranging from 595 to 760 dollars. Not sure that enough to make the next iPhone forget.
